The lingering shots of Hawkins, the almost tactile quality of its suburban ennui before the supernatural intrudes, speak to a deep understanding of Spielbergian wonder and Carpenter’s creeping dread.

The series finds its greatest strength in its ensemble. Winona Ryder, as Joyce Byers, delivers a performance of raw, unraveling maternal anguish that anchors the initial mystery. It’s a testament to her commitment that her frantic desperation, teetering on the edge of hysteria, never feels melodramatic, but profoundly human. Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven, a character often reduced to a cipher, finds nuances in her quiet power and burgeoning humanity, her limited dialogue forcing her to communicate through piercing gazes and subtle shifts in posture.
