EPISODENEW.COM Review
The crime drama genre, when handled with precision, can dissect the human condition with surgical grace. Regrettably, "56 Days," despite its intriguing premise, often feels more like a blunt instrument. The series, centered around the unraveling of Oliver Kennedy and Ciara Wyse's fatal romance, attempts a non-linear narrative, charting backwards from a grim discovery. This structure, a well-worn path in mystery, here feels less like an artistic choice and more like a crutch for a screenplay that struggles to build genuine tension.
The direction, while competent, rarely elevates beyond the functional. We are shown events, rather than invited to experience them. Detective Reardon (Dorian Missick) and Connolly (Karla Souza) perform their duties with a stoicism that borders on the inert, preventing any true emotional resonance from developing. The potential for a compelling psychological study of a relationship’s demise is squandered by an almost clinical detachment in the camera’s gaze. Cinematography, in its pursuit of a sleek, modern aesthetic for the luxury apartment setting, often sacrifices atmospheric depth for superficial gloss.
Where "56 Days" truly falters is in its characterizations, or lack thereof. Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia, as the ill-fated couple, are given little to work with beyond archetypes. Their performances, while not overtly poor, are constrained by a script that prioritizes plot mechanics over character development. We are told of their passion, but rarely shown it in a way that feels earned or believable. The "deadly romance" is more a narrative directive than a lived reality on screen. The series’ 4.4/10 rating, while harsh, reflects a fundamental misstep: the belief that a compelling mystery can be built on the sands of underdeveloped characters and predictable narrative beats. It’s a drama that respects the form but forgets the art of truly engaging storytelling.
